Dental plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. Its presence is completely normal, but when it is not removed regularly through brushing, flossing, and professional dental care, it can quietly damage oral health. Left unchecked, plaque can lead to cavities, gum disease, and more serious dental problems that affect both comfort and confidence.

Plaque is made up of bacteria, saliva, and tiny bits of leftover food. When food is eaten, especially items high in sugar or starch, the bacteria in the mouth feed on these particles. Over time, tartar can become yellow or dark in colour, especially in people who frequently consume drinks like coffee or tea or use tobacco products. Once tartar forms, the risk of dental problems increases significantly.

Plaque often comes with clear signs. Persistent bad breath that does not improve with brushing, along with red, swollen gums that may bleed easily, are common indicators. These symptoms suggest that plaque is irritating the gums and may already be causing early gum disease.

The consequences of ignoring plaque can be serious. As plaque and tartar build up, they can cause cavities, gum infections, painful tooth abscesses, and even tooth loss. These issues not only affect oral health but can also impact overall well-being, making prevention essential rather than optional.
