Jaundice in babies is very common, especially in the first days of life, and in most cases it is harmless. It happens because newborns have a high number of red blood cells that break down quickly. When these cells break down, they produce a yellow substance called bilirubin. A baby’s liver is still developing, so it may not yet be strong enough to remove bilirubin from the blood efficiently. As a result, bilirubin builds up and causes the skin and eyes to look yellow.

As the baby grows, the body naturally produces less bilirubin, and the liver becomes better at clearing it away. By about two weeks of age, jaundice usually fades on its own without causing any problems. This is why most cases of newborn jaundice resolve naturally and do not harm the baby.

Breastfeeding can make jaundice more noticeable in some babies, but this should not cause alarm. There is no need to stop breastfeeding, as the benefits are far greater than any temporary increase in jaundice. In some breastfed babies, jaundice can last longer, sometimes up to several weeks. Even then, it often remains harmless. However, a healthcare professional needs to monitor the baby to make sure there is no underlying cause that needs attention. If treatment is required, it may involve more frequent feeding and extra fluids to help the body remove bilirubin faster.

In some situations, jaundice may be a sign of another health condition. This type of jaundice is less common but more serious and needs medical evaluation. It can be linked to problems such as hormone imbalances, infections, blood group differences between parent and baby, inherited conditions that affect how bilirubin is processed, or blockages in the system that carries bile from the liver. Babies with a family history of certain inherited enzyme conditions may need closer observation to prevent complications.

Jaundice is usually a normal part of a baby’s early life, but it should never be ignored. With proper monitoring and timely care when needed, jaundice can be managed safely. Early attention provides reassurance, protects the baby’s health, and ensures a strong start to life.
