A stomach ulcer is an open sore that develops in the lining of the stomach, and while food is not the cause, what someone eats can play a big role in how the stomach heals and feels. The main culprit behind most ulcers is a bacterial infection known as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), along with the frequent use of painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

There is no strict diet that a person with an ulcer must follow, but science now shows that certain foods contain powerful compounds that may help fight the bacteria, reduce irritation, and support healing. Alongside any antibiotics or acid-blocking medication prescribed by a doctor, choosing the right foods can make a meaningful difference.

Fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, cherries, blackberries, and bell peppers, can strengthen the immune system and help the body fight infection. Leafy greens such as spinach and kale provide calcium and B vitamins, while broccoli offers sulforaphane, a compound shown to act against H. pylori. Garlic, turmeric, and honey also show promising protective effects. Healthy oils such as olive oil have antibacterial properties too. Probiotic-rich foods, including yogurt, sauerkraut, and miso, help restore balance in the gut and may prevent reinfection. Even a simple cup of decaffeinated green tea can support healing with its soothing compounds.

On the other hand, some foods can make symptoms worse, especially for those who also struggle with acid reflux. Coffee, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, tomatoes, spicy meals, and caffeine are known to trigger heartburn and discomfort. Eating very large meals or lying down soon after eating can also worsen reflux symptoms, putting more strain on the stomach.

The key is simple: by focusing on foods that strengthen the body’s natural defences and avoiding those that irritate the stomach, a person with an ulcer can take charge of their healing. The right food choices, combined with proper medical treatment, not only ease discomfort but also help the stomach recover and stay healthy in the long run.
