Jock itch is a common fungal infection that causes an itchy, burning rash in the groin area, inner thighs, and the crease between the buttocks. The infection behaves much like ringworm, creating irritated skin that may crack, peel, or develop small bumps or blisters. The colour of the rash can vary, but it often looks red, scaly or flaky, and sometimes forms a ring-like shape with a more defined edge.

This condition can affect anyone, although it appears more often in adolescent and adult men. It is less common in women and rare in children. Certain factors make someone more likely to develop jock itch, such as diabetes, excess body weight, or a weakened immune system. Women can also get jock itch, but it usually affects the same areas around the groin and rarely involves the genitals.

Jock itch spreads easily because the fungus thrives in warm, moist environments. Tight clothing traps heat and sweat around the groin, giving the fungus the perfect opportunity to grow. It can spread through direct skin contact, shared towels or clothing, or even from one part of the body to another. For example, someone with athlete’s foot may unknowingly transfer the fungus to the groin if they touch their foot and then their underwear area, or if the fungus spreads through clothing while getting dressed.

Although jock itch can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, it is treatable. Understanding what causes it and how it spreads makes it easier to prevent. With good hygiene, dry skin and breathable clothing, anyone can protect themselves and reduce the chances of infection.
