Toothache, can sometimes be caused by a tooth abscess, though this is not always the case. A tooth abscess is a collection of pus resulting from an infection deep within the tooth or in the surrounding structures, typically due to tooth decay.

In addition to pain, the individual may experience swelling of the gum, and in some cases, swelling that affects the face. They may also feel unwell, with symptoms like fever, and the tooth can become extremely sensitive to touch.

It is crucial to see a dentist as soon as possible if a tooth abscess is suspected. A dentist can often drain the pus to relieve the symptoms and then address the underlying cause. While a Medical Doctor can technically prescribe antibiotics in an emergency, they are not trained in dentistry. A doctor may not be able to determine whether antibiotics are needed or not, meaning the only proper solution is a visit to the dentist.

In some cases, even emergency dental care may not be fast enough, and urgent medical care might be necessary. This is typically the case if the individual is very unwell, experiencing shivering and shaking, a high fever, swelling that extends from the face down to the jawline, or if they are unable to open their mouth due to pain and swelling.
