We all have vomited at one time or the other. Although this truth may look and sound disgusting, it is 100% true and a core component of your bodily function.
Vomiting, as bad as it may look, is actually a very healthy process. It is your body’s way of getting rid of something harmful that you might have consumed.
We vomit due to various reasons. It could be due to: food poisoning, viral infection, motion sickness, migraine headaches, being nervous, etc. but the most common cause behind vomiting is because of an upset stomach caused by viruses or bacteria.
Although vomiting often feels as if it is due to a rumbling tummy, however, it is triggered by a part of our brain called Postrema. When our brain sends the signal to our stomach and muscles around it, various changes begin to happen in our body;
- Our mouth begins to produce more saliva, to protect our teeth from stomach acid
- Your blood starts moving to your internal organs, making your face lose colour
- Your heart rate increases
- You begin to breath heavily and faster
- The diaphragm starts to contract to squeeze the stomach to create pressure, finally,
- The abdominal muscles contract to further increase the pressure, propelling the food upward, out of the stomach and out of the mouth.
After vomiting, try relaxing or sitting down, and as you feel a bit better, try to take a few sips of water (Don’t drink soda or juices right away or things might get worse). Also, if you feel feverish & vomit several times in a day, or for more than a day or two, visit your doctor as soon as possible.
